Our customers help us to redesign Tesco packaging to improve freshness and reduce food waste.

Customers tell us that the most important thing they want from Tesco is quality. We’re always looking for new ways to improve what we do for them. With the help of over 6,800 customers we've been able to change our Finest* cooked meat packaging to improve quality and reduce food waste.
We've listened to our customers to gauge their opinions and incorporate their ideas on how to improve the rangeWe've looked at two main aspects; packaging and taste.

Easy open, easy close packaging

Our customers are conscious about reducing food waste at home so we've changed our packaging to an 'envelope' format. Cooked meat packaging hasn't changed for years; it was overdue some innovation. We've responded to our customers' suggestions for an easy open and reseal feature.
The reseal is easy to find and undo. The new reseal means your last slice will be as lovely as your first. We hope this will help our customers reduce food waste at home. Each pack now also includes a card tray, which means you can easily slide out and return any unused meat.

Delivering a 'Home Roast' experience

The home roasting experience is also what our customers want. Working with our chefs and suppliers we've simplified and improved our cooking process. Now our sliced cooked chicken, turkey and beef have the home roasted taste and texture customers are looking for.
We've also increased the size of the window on the pack because our customers want to see as much of the meat as possible. Customers judge meat quality and freshness by its appearance, so being able to see more of the meat in the packaging was important to them.

Packaging to reduce food waste

Packaging developments, like this, support our food waste reduction targets. We’re working with suppliers on some trials to innovate how our produce is packaged. We're looking for better performing packaging that takes the needs of older consumers and single households into account.

With our ‘eat fresh, keep fresh’ chicken fillet packaging, the fillets come in a packet that has a separate compartment for each chicken breast, with a tear seal between the two. This means customers can eat one and keep the other which we hope will help them to reduce food waste at home. Our bagged salads now also come in a re-sealable packet.

Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have commended Tesco for introducing this new re-sealable packaging adding that it will help in the fight to reduce household food waste.

No time for waste

Launching this new packaging is part of our ongoing work to tackle food waste wherever it occurs – from farm to fork. Tesco believes that no food that could be eaten should be wasted. That’s why we’ve committed that no food that is safe for human consumption will go to waste from Tesco UK retail operations by the end of 2017.
